Organic Baby Formula Helps You to Feed Your Baby in a Healthy Way

European infant formulas are known for their high quality standards. The composition of the ingredients is very close to breast milk.

They do not contain dubious additives such as corn syrup or genetic engineering. The best-known brands include Hipp, Holle and Lebenswert. The milk for these products comes from happy cows and goats that live in a natural environment.

To be certified as baby food in the EU, extraordinarily strict control mechanisms have to be passed.

Does organic baby formula make a difference?

Organic baby food consists of at least 95% organic ingredients. This means that all ingredients in the formula must meet organic standards. Those who feed their babies bionutrition thereby reduce exposure to harmful synthetic ingredients. Farmers use pesticides, for example, to protect their crops. This is necessary on large farms and legitimate within certain limits. Unfortunately, chemical residues can remain in food. This is usually not a problem for adult consumers, but it is far from ideal for a tiny baby. Organic baby food helps limit exposure to these substances.

Breast is best

In America, it can be challenging to find and buy a suitable organic baby formula. For those who value organic baby food and want to avoid certain ingredients, it’s all the more difficult. However, there are some high quality organic baby foods out there. Many of them do not come from America, but from Europe.

As the saying goes, breast is best. This is perfectly true in theory, but unfortunately (sufficient) breastfeeding is not possible for all mothers. The reasons may be physical or psychological, but it is certain that some babies need a substitute or at least a supplement. Unfortunately, some milk formulas, especially those produced in the United States, contain ingredients that are not particularly healthy for your baby.

Some parents prefer organic baby food for other reasons, too. For one, it is more environmentally friendly to produce. Other parents have found that organic food simply tastes better to their babies. Giving a child healthy food from the start also lays the foundation for a lifetime of healthy eating.

Are European formulas better than American ones?

More than 50 different varieties of baby formula are available in the United States. Some are made from organic or conventional milk, others from soy. There are also special foods for babies who burp a lot, have diarrhea or frequent stomach aches. In the United States, organic baby foods may not contain genetically modified organisms (GMOs), growth hormones, antibiotics, artificial colors or flavors, synthetic preservatives, pesticides, and insecticides. No other food is as strictly regulated as baby food.

However, in most European countries the standards are even higher. In the EU, organic baby foods must not contain sugar or solid syrup. They must provide at least 30% of their calories from lactose (the natural carbohydrate of milk) and contain absolutely no nutrients extracted with chemical solvents.

Surveys have shown that many parents choose European organic infant formula because they want to provide their babies with the absolute best nutrition. It’s not that they don’t trust U.S. products at all, but if there’s a little room for optimization, they’d like to take advantage of it.

What’s the best European organic baby formula?

In Europe, there are of course also suppliers of conventional formulas (which differ only marginally from US products), but the market has been dominated for many years by high-quality organic infant formulas. To list them all is beyond the scope of this article. However, some particularly popular manufacturers are so well known that they have even been heard of in the US.

Among the best-known, highest-quality products, those from HiPP, Holle and Lebenswert stand out. Not only are they the most popular quality organic products in the EU, they are also the ones most frequently imported into America.

Hipp Organic Baby Formula

Germany’s top-selling baby food manufacturer has production facilities in its own country as well as in Croatia, Austria, Switzerland, Ukraine and Hungary. Owner Claus Hipp calls himself and his company “organic pioneers”. Even when organic was not yet a trend, his father Georg Hipp was committed to it. As early as 1956, Hipp began to grow fruit and vegetables on natural soils and without chemicals. Hipp’s corporate philosophy is to manufacture top-quality products in harmony with nature. So as far as possible, organic quality is used in the baby food.

Less is more

Hipp baby formulas have a low protein content with improved protein quality. Studies show that high protein intake in infancy increases the risk of obesity later in life. Experts therefore recommend pushing breastfeeding as well as keeping the protein content of infant formulas within certain limits.

Organic quality in all infant milk formulas

HiPP is one of the first brands in the world to rely on organic-quality dairy raw materials for infant formulas as well. The company has been pursuing this philosophy for more than 30 years. HiPP’s organic quality sets much stricter guidelines than those required by law.

Lactose only

HiPP uses only one type of sugar for its infant formulae, just like breast milk. This sugar is lactose. Other manufacturers often use other types of sugar. Sugars such as glucose and maltodextrin, although cheaper to produce, are not ideal for children.

With valuable fatty acids

The new EU directive for baby formulas stipulates that products must contain certain long-chain polyunsaturated fatty acids (known as LPCs). HiPP has been using these for a long time before. These fatty acids are not only important for the brain, but also for the nerves and eyes.

Organic Baby Formula With Prebiotics and Probiotics

The popular HiPP BIO COMBIOTIK® foods and HA COMBIOTIK® foods contain prebiotics and probiotics based on the natural model. Similar substances are also found in breast milk. HiPP foods contain a natural probiotic originally isolated from breast milk. The company has held a patent on this substance, called L. fermentum hereditum®, for many years. HiPP uses galactooligoaccharides (GOS) as prebiotics. These are produced from lactose and are also a natural component of breast milk.

Organic Baby Formula = Absolutely no genetic engineering

As a matter of principle, no genetically modified organisms are used for HiPP organic baby food. This applies not only to the dairy animals themselves, but also to their feed. HiPP is the only brand producer in the “Company Tops” category of the Greenpeace guide – the best rating there is.

Whether newborns or children who are about to wean: Hipp has the right organic baby or toddler formula for every age group. Products for sensitive stomachs or difficult digestion as well as a product line for children at risk of allergies round off the range. The best ones to start with are Hipp Combiotic Pre and Hipp Combiotic 1.

Holle Organic Baby Formula

For over 85 years, the traditional Swiss company has been acting “Sustainably from the beginning”. Holle was the first manufacturer of baby and infant formula to follow the so-called Demeter philosophy. “Demeter” stands for biodynamic agriculture. This approach considers the well-being of humans and the well-being of nature to be equally important. Holles extensive organic range offers suitable products for every age and development stage. The formulas meet the highest standards of organic quality. Each one contains all the essential vitamins and nutrients that babies need for healthy development from day one.

  • Natural circular farming without exploitation of animals, soil and the environment.
  • Quality instead of quantity
  • Animal husbandry appropriate to the species
  • No use of hormones and growth regulators
  • Natural fertilization with compost instead of artificial fertilizers
  • Renunciation of all chemical plant and insect protection agents
  • Particularly gentle processing and no use of chemical additives

Holle was one of the first manufacturers to launch a product line made from goat’s milk. The milk of the goat contains very similar proteins to the otherwise usual cow’s milk and thus brings no advantage in allergies, but overall it is much more digestible and especially suitable for babies with sensitive tummies. Apart from the new goat’s milk, Holle also offers organic baby formulas made from Demeter cow’s milk, covering all age groups from newborn to weaning.

Demeter – Certified products for Holle Baby Formulas

Demeter is a German organic growers association whose name was trademarked in Munich in 1932 for biodynamic products.

For recognition of Demeter quality, two years of cultivation according to the biodynamic method is first required. The producer of Demeter products must confirm with his signature at the annual harvest registration that he has complied with the cultivation rules. Demeter quality is then recognized by a representative of the Demeter Research Ring for Biodynamic Agriculture. The Quality Assurance Office of the Research Ring carries out quality controls on a random basis.

In addition to the EC Organic Regulation and the German state organic seal, Demeter uses an association-specific organic seal – the Demeter logo. Its requirements go far beyond those of the EC Organic Regulation and the German state organic seal. It may only be used by contractual partners who adhere to the guidelines of the Demeter association throughout the entire cultivation and processing process.

Lebenswert Organic Baby Formula

“Lebenswert bio” offers the basis for a wholesome and balanced baby nutrition with a comprehensive range of infant milk formulas from the best organic farming. The company voluntarily follows the so-called Bioland guidelines. The EU laws for organic baby formulas are already very strict, but the Bioland guidelines are even stricter. In organic farming according to the Bioland philosophy, people, animals, plants and soil are respected and valued – management in harmony with nature is paramount. Organic farmers guarantee species-appropriate feeding and husbandry of the animals, plant protection and fertilization without chemical-synthetic means and the care of soil fertility. The food produced in this way is sustainable and gentle on the environment.

Lebenswert organic baby food is comprehensively controlled and inspected from the certified farmer through processing to the finished product. This is confirmed by the organic label visible on the product with the green EU organic logo and the organic inspection body number. In the case of products certified by the Bioland Association, the producers and manufacturers are additionally checked for compliance with the Bioland guidelines by state-approved inspection bodies.

Organic farming is particularly designed for sustainability. It preserves and conserves natural resources and has a variety of positive effects on the environment. The Lebenswert bio baby food brand is making a special contribution with its commitment to “I plant a tree” for the reforestation of regional forest areas in Germany – and thus for climate protection: To date, almost 5,500 trees have been donated for planting.

With the infant milk 1 you have a complete breast milk substitute food at your disposal. This is suitable for feeding from birth and contains all the necessary nutrients. After the 6th month, Lebenswert Organic Follow-on Milk 2 can be used and from the 10th month, Lebenswert Organic Follow-on Milk 3.
