Does organic baby formula make a difference?

Organic baby food consists of at least 95% organic ingredients. This means that all ingredients in the formula must meet organic standards. Those who feed their babies bionutrition thereby reduce exposure to harmful synthetic ingredients. Farmers use pesticides, for example, to protect their crops. This is necessary on large farms and legitimate within certain limits. Unfortunately, chemical residues can remain in food. This is usually not a problem for adult consumers, but it is far from ideal for a tiny baby. Organic baby food helps limit exposure to these substances.

Breast is best

In America, it can be challenging to find and buy a suitable organic baby formula. For those who value organic baby food and want to avoid certain ingredients, it’s all the more difficult. However, there are some high quality organic baby foods out there. Many of them do not come from America, but from Europe.

As the saying goes, breast is best. This is perfectly true in theory, but unfortunately (sufficient) breastfeeding is not possible for all mothers. The reasons may be physical or psychological, but it is certain that some babies need a substitute or at least a supplement. Unfortunately, some milk formulas, especially those produced in the United States, contain ingredients that are not particularly healthy for your baby.

Some parents prefer organic baby food for other reasons, too. For one, it is more environmentally friendly to produce. Other parents have found that organic food simply tastes better to their babies. Are European formulas better than American ones?

More than 50 different varieties of baby formula are available in the United States. Some are made from organic or conventional milk, others from soy. There are also special foods for babies who burp a lot, have diarrhea or frequent stomach aches. In the United States, organic baby foods may not contain genetically modified organisms (GMOs), growth hormones, antibiotics, artificial colors or flavors, synthetic preservatives, pesticides, and insecticides. No other food is as strictly regulated as baby food.

However, in most European countries the standards are even higher. In the EU, organic baby foods must not contain sugar or solid syrup. They must provide at least 30% of their calories from lactose (the natural carbohydrate of milk) and contain absolutely no nutrients extracted with chemical solvents.

Surveys have shown that many parents choose European organic infant formula because they want to provide their babies with the absolute best nutrition. It’s not that they don’t trust U.S. products at all, but if there’s a little room for optimization, they’d like to take advantage of it.

What’s the best European organic baby formula?

In Europe, there are of course also suppliers of conventional formulas (which differ only marginally from US products), but the market has been dominated for many years by high-quality organic infant formulas. To list them all is beyond the scope of this article. However, some particularly popular manufacturers are so well known that they have even been heard of in the US.

Among the best-known, highest-quality products, those from HiPP, Holle and Lebenswert stand out. Not only are they the most popular quality organic products in the EU, they are also the ones most frequently imported into America.

Hipp Organic Baby Formula

Germany’s top-selling baby food manufacturer has production facilities in its own country as well as in Croatia, Austria, Switzerland, Ukraine and Hungary. Owner Claus Hipp calls himself and his company “organic pioneers”. Even when organic was not yet a trend, his father Georg Hipp was committed to it. As early as 1956, Hipp began to grow fruit and vegetables on natural soils and without chemicals. Hipp’s corporate philosophy is to manufacture top-quality products in harmony with nature. So as far as possible, organic quality is used in the baby food.

Less is more

Hipp baby formulas have a low protein content with improved protein quality. Studies show that high protein intake in infancy increases the risk of obesity later in life. Experts therefore recommend pushing breastfeeding as well as keeping the protein content of infant formulas within certain limits.

Organic quality in all infant milk formulas

Demeter – Certified products for Holle Baby Formulas

Demeter is a German organic growers association whose name was trademarked in Munich in 1932 for biodynamic products.

For recognition of Demeter quality, two years of cultivation according to the biodynamic method is first required. The producer of Demeter products must confirm with his signature at the annual harvest registration that he has complied with the cultivation rules. Demeter quality is then recognized by a representative of the Demeter Research Ring for Biodynamic Agriculture. The Quality Assurance Office of the Research Ring carries out quality controls on a random basis.

In addition to the EC Organic Regulation and the German state organic seal, Demeter uses an association-specific organic seal – the Demeter logo. Its requirements go far beyond those of the EC Organic Regulation and the German state organic seal. It may only be used by contractual partners who adhere to the guidelines of the Demeter association throughout the entire cultivation and processing process.

Lebenswert Organic Baby Formula
