How the Stage System Works

European baby formulas are divided into stages based on your baby’s age and nutritional needs. You don’t need to know the brand first — just find your baby’s stage and we’ll show you the options.

🍼 Stage PREFrom birth — 0 to 6 months
Best for: Newborns and babies with sensitive digestion

The closest formula to breast milk. No added starch, easy to digest. Ideal for newborns who are exclusively formula-fed or supplementing breastfeeding.

⭐ Stage 412 to 24 months

Stage PRE or Stage 1 — which should I choose?
Both are suitable from birth. PRE has no added starch and is the closest to breast milk. Stage 1 is slightly more filling. When in doubt, PRE is the safer starting point for newborns.

Common Questions About Stages

Can I switch stages before the recommended age?

Yes — the age ranges are guidelines. If your baby seems hungry or ready for more, you can move to the next stage. Introduce it gradually over a few days.

Do all brands offer every stage?

HiPP covers PRE through Stage 4 Junior. Holle covers PRE through Stage 4 in both cow and goat milk. Lebenswert covers Stages 1 through 3.

Can I mix stages or brands?

Yes. Many parents mix during transitions. Introduce any change gradually and watch for signs of discomfort.
