5 Tips to Help Your Baby Sleep Through the Night

Getting a good night’s sleep is a dream for most new parents. Trust us, we have been there! Sleep deprivation can affect both your mood and your ability to function during the day.

Lack of sleep can even lead to symptoms such as:

  • Poor planning
  • Increased risk taking
  • Disorganization
  • Poor prioritization

In extreme cases, severe sleep deprivation may even cause hallucinations or paranoia. For parents of newborns, getting enough rest is extremely important. While sleeping a full eight hours may not be possible during the early months, there are several strategies that can help your baby sleep longer and more peacefully.

Here are some practical tips that worked for us.

1. Swaddle Your Baby

Have you ever experienced the sudden feeling of falling while asleep? Babies often experience something similar due to the startle reflex, especially during the first four months.

Swaddling your baby snugly in a soft cotton blanket can help prevent these sudden movements and allow your baby to sleep more comfortably. Think of it like wrapping your baby in a cozy “burrito.”

2. Limit Long Daytime Naps

If your baby sleeps too much during the day, they may stay awake longer at night.

Most babies should nap for about 2 to 2.5 hours at a time during the day. While an occasional longer nap is normal, try to encourage longer sleep periods at night instead.

3. Expose Your Baby to Daylight

Sunlight helps regulate the body’s natural sleep rhythm by reducing melatonin levels during the day.

Allowing your baby to experience natural daylight can help them stay more awake during daytime hours and sleep better at night.

Just make sure to protect your baby's skin if they are exposed to direct sunlight.

4. Use White Noise

Some babies are very sensitive to background noise and may wake up easily.

White noise can help mask sudden sounds and create a calming environment. You can use a white noise machine, a fan, or even white noise recordings available online.

Many parents find that the gentle humming sound helps babies fall asleep faster and stay asleep longer.

5. Create a Consistent Bedtime Routine

A predictable bedtime routine can signal to your baby that it is time to sleep.

Try following the same routine every evening for at least several weeks. A simple routine might include:

  • A warm calming bath
  • Putting on pajamas
  • Gentle rocking or cuddling
  • Singing a lullaby or reading a short story

Some parents also find that adding a few drops of lavender oil to bath water helps create a relaxing environment before bedtime.

Consistency is key. Over time your baby will begin to associate this routine with sleep.

Every baby is different, so it may take some experimentation to find the routine that works best for your family.
