Road Trip with a Baby: Tips for Traveling by Car with an Infant

Road trips can be a great way to relax and disconnect from daily routines, especially during the summer. However, going on a car trip with your infant can sometimes be a bit more challenging.

Whether you are driving for just a few hours or planning a multi-day journey, a little preparation can make the experience much smoother. Here are some helpful tips to ensure your road trip not only goes smoothly but is also enjoyable for the whole family.

1. Have One Adult Sit in the Back Seat

If possible, while one person drives, the other adult should sit in the back seat with the baby. This allows you to quickly take care of your child’s needs, such as preparing bottles, offering snacks, or changing diapers.

This can help avoid unnecessary stops and reduce stress during the trip. If your baby falls asleep, the person sitting in the back can also rest so they are refreshed when it’s their turn to drive.

2. Take Regular Breaks

Babies and toddlers usually don’t have a lot of patience during long trips, so plan for regular breaks.

If your journey is relatively short, try to schedule most of the driving during your baby’s nap time. Another option—though sometimes more tiring for the driver—is to drive during the night. Many babies sleep through nighttime travel, allowing you to enjoy sightseeing during the day.

3. Bring Healthy Snacks and Mealtime Options

Food can be a great distraction during a long car ride. Pack some of your baby’s favorite healthy snacks to keep them satisfied and happy.

Good snack options may include:

  • Whole organic grain cereals
  • Fresh organic fruits cut into bite-sized pieces
  • Baby-friendly snacks suitable for your child’s age

4. Planning Is Everything

Preparation is key when traveling with a baby. Creating a checklist before leaving can help ensure you don’t forget any important items.

Some travel essentials include:

  • A portable changing pad
  • Enough diapers for the journey
  • Bottles with formula or breast milk
  • A cooler bag or portable fridge for milk or formula
  • Baby wipes
  • Two or three favorite toys
  • A bucket in case of car sickness
  • An extra blanket

Many parents find it helpful to keep a digital checklist that they update after each trip.

5. Make the Journey Fun

Vacations are all about spending quality time together as a family. While the journey itself can sometimes be stressful, it can also be a great opportunity to create fun memories.

Play music everyone can sing along to or engage your baby with simple games.

Some fun activities we enjoy during road trips include:

  • Bubbles: Bring a small bubble container made with non-toxic dish soap. Blowing bubbles can quickly calm a baby and make them smile.
  • Where is your nose? If your baby is old enough, ask them to point to body parts like their nose or feet.
  • Puppets: Finger puppets are great for creating little stories that entertain babies and toddlers.
  • Picture books: Many babies love picture books, and reading together can be very soothing during travel.

Enjoy the Journey
