The big day is getting closer, and with it comes growing excitement. Only a few days or weeks remain before you meet your baby!
By now you have probably started preparing the nursery and gathering all the essentials your baby will need once they arrive home. Another important thing to prepare is your hospital bag.
Even if you are planning a home birth, it is still a good idea to have a hospital bag ready. Unexpected situations can happen, and having everything prepared will make the experience much less stressful.
When Should You Pack Your Hospital Bag?
Ideally, your hospital bag should be packed by week 36 of pregnancy. This way you will be ready if labor starts earlier than expected.
Many parents also like to bring a few personal items from home to make the hospital environment feel more comfortable. This could be something simple like your favorite pillow or blanket. Just make sure to check your hospital’s policies regarding what items you are allowed to bring.
Hospital Bag Essentials for Mom
Here are some essential items to pack in your hospital bag to help you stay comfortable before, during, and after labor.
- Underwear: Pack loose and comfortable underwear. Bring more than usual since you may need to change them several times a day due to postpartum bleeding.
- Socks: Warm, fluffy socks can help keep you comfortable, especially during labor when your feet may feel cold.
- Slippers: Easy slip-on slippers are ideal for walking around the hospital corridors.
- Dressing gown or robe: Perfect for moving around the hospital comfortably before labor begins.
- Maternity notes or medical documents: Keep all your pregnancy notes and medical information easily accessible.
- Old nightdress: Choose one you do not mind getting messy during labor.
- Birth ball: If your hospital does not provide one or the size does not suit you, consider bringing your own.
- Hairband: Especially helpful if you have long hair during labor.
- Books or magazines: Great for relaxing and passing time while waiting.
- Music: Many moms find relaxing music helpful during labor.
Second Bag: Postpartum Essentials
Many moms pack a second smaller bag with items they will need after the baby is born.
- Pajamas: Bring at least two comfortable pairs.
- Toiletries: Toothbrush, toothpaste, shampoo, soap, deodorant, face cream, and other personal care products.
- Phone charger: Very important so you can stay connected and take photos.
- Comfortable clothes: Loose clothing to wear when leaving the hospital.
- Maternity bras: Bring a few comfortable nursing bras.
- Maternity pads: Hospitals may provide these, but it’s good to have your own.
- Pillow or blanket: If allowed by the hospital, something familiar from home can make you feel more comfortable.
