The moment has come—you’ve decided it’s time for your baby’s first formula. Your interest in organic formula has brought you here to the Organic Baby Formula Shop, and that’s wonderful! We’re very happy to have you here.
But maybe you’re thinking more about how rather than what. Giving formula to a breastfed baby for the first time can feel intimidating. Will your baby reject it? Will they dislike the taste or miss the cuddles?
Don’t worry—we’ve put together a few helpful tips to make introducing formula to your breastfed baby easier.
Tips for Giving Formula to a Breastfed Baby
-
Start by pumping breast milk.
If possible, continue pumping and offer your baby expressed breast milk from a bottle first. This helps your baby get used to drinking from a bottle before introducing formula. -
Try different bottle nipples.
Don’t be discouraged if your baby initially refuses the bottle. Some babies are very particular about bottle nipples. One of our moms struggled until she tried a Nuk brand nipple, which her baby loved. Don’t be afraid to experiment until you find what works. -
Let someone else offer the first bottle.
Sometimes babies associate mom with breastfeeding. Having a partner, friend, or family member offer the first bottle can make the transition easier. -
Start with a gradual mix.
Begin by mixing breast milk and formula in a 50/50 ratio. This allows your baby to slowly adjust to the taste and helps avoid digestive surprises.

Moving to Full Formula Feeding
-
Switch gradually to full formula bottles.

Keep the cuddles.
Feeding time is still a wonderful bonding moment whether you breastfeed or bottle-feed. Maintain eye contact, hold your baby close, and continue showering them with love. -
Expect minor digestive adjustments.
Some babies may experience gas or changes in stool when first switching to formula. This is completely normal and usually resolves within a week as the digestive system adjusts.
Switching to formula is a very personal decision. It can be influenced by work, exhaustion, emotions, or simply what works best for your family.
Whatever your situation, trust your instincts and do what feels right for your baby. You’re doing an amazing job.
